This meeting of Chicago Society for Space Studies features the presentation The Impact of Space Policy on Space Settlement. This talk explores the impact today’s space policies have on the future of space settlement and how these policies can either advance or delay the day that permanent human space settlements become a reality. Also discussed will be the relevance of the Space Exploration, Development, and Settlement Act of 2016 (H.R. 4752, aka SEDS Act) and the proposed draft legislation for a gapless transition from ISS to private space stations in LEO. Our speaker will be CSSS President Jim Plaxco. A question and answer session will follow the presentation.
This event is a registered World Space Week event. This program is free and open to the public. |

Mankind has always dreamed of traveling to the stars and as technology advanced, dreams became studies for interstellar travel. However, none of these plans were ever carried-out because of three major obstacles – Technology, Energy, and Economics.
Prospects for Interstellar Travel looks at these issues and others that must be addressed and resolved before interstellar travel with humans can be seriously considered. The talk will look at starship design requirements, what a starship might look like, and how it might be propelled to relativistic velocities. This talk will also describe what is currently known about nearby Earth-like exoplanets and will provide an example of an expedition to a solar system 24 light years away. Prospects for Interstellar Travel is presented by CSSS’ special guest speaker David Raske. Dr. Raske holds a PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 1965 he worked on the NASA Apollo program and in 1967 he designed the Boiling Water Reactor pressure vessels for the Monticello MN and Vermont Yankee nuclear This program is free and open to the public. |
